To cancel Claude Pro, open the billing settings in the place where you originally subscribed: the website for a card payment made on the web, your Apple subscriptions list for an iPhone or iPad purchase, or the Google Play subscriptions list for an Android purchase. Cancelling in the wrong place does nothing, which is the most common reason people keep getting charged. This guide covers all three paths, explains how consumer billing differs from developer API billing, and ends with a checklist to confirm the cancellation worked.

A note on accuracy: menu names and screen layouts change as apps and websites are updated. The steps below follow the general structure those platforms use, so if a label differs slightly, look for the nearest equivalent and rely on the provider’s current help pages for the final word.

Step zero: find out who bills you

A subscription belongs to whoever collects the money. That might be the service itself, Apple or Google. Before you click anything, find the most recent receipt email and check the sender. The sender, plus the card or payment method on the receipt, tells you which billing path to use.

Where you subscribed Typical receipt sender Where to cancel
Website, paid by card The service itself Account or billing settings on the web
iPhone or iPad app purchase Apple Subscriptions list in your Apple account settings
Android app purchase Google Play Payments and subscriptions in the Play Store
Work or team plan Your employer or an admin Ask the workspace administrator; individuals often cannot cancel

Cancel on the web

If you paid through the website, sign in on a computer or a mobile browser, open your profile or account menu, and go to Settings, then the Billing or Plan section. Look for a button such as Cancel subscription or Manage subscription. Some accounts route this through a payment-management page hosted by a payment processor, which opens in a new tab.

  1. Sign in with the same account that holds the subscription. People with more than one email address sometimes look at the wrong account.
  2. Open settings and find billing details.
  3. Select the cancel option and follow the prompts. You may be asked for a reason or offered a pause or discount; you can skip these.
  4. Confirm. Look for a message saying the plan will end or stop renewing on a specific date.
  5. Save the confirmation email or take a screenshot of the screen showing the end date.

Cancel on iPhone or iPad

If Apple collects the payment, the cancellation is done in Apple’s system, not inside the Claude app. Open the Settings app, tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions. Find the entry for the service in the list and tap it, then choose Cancel Subscription. You can also reach the same list from the App Store app by tapping your profile picture and then Subscriptions.

If you do not see the entry, the likely explanations are that you are signed in with a different Apple account than the one used to buy, or that you actually subscribed on the web. Family Sharing can also hide subscriptions that another family member owns. Apple generally states the date the plan stops renewing on the same screen, so note it down.

Cancel on Android

For a Google Play purchase, open the Play Store app, tap your profile picture, and go to Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Select the service, then tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts. Make sure the Google account shown at the top is the one used for the purchase, because a phone with several accounts defaults to one of them. On a computer, you can reach the same list through the Play Store website by signing in to the right account.

As with Apple, deleting the app does not end the billing relationship. The plan only stops renewing once Google shows it as cancelled.

Consumer plan versus developer API billing

A chat subscription and API access are usually separate products with separate billing. The consumer subscription covers use of the chat apps and website, while developer API usage is typically billed per use through a developer console, often with prepaid credits or a payment method on file. Cancelling one does not usually affect the other, so if you also experimented with scripts, tools or coding assistants that call the API, check that console independently.

Item Consumer subscription Developer API account
What you pay for A monthly plan for chat apps Usage-based charges or credits
Where billing lives Web, Apple or Google Play Developer console billing page
Does cancelling the other stop it? No No
Things to review Renewal date, payment method Credits balance, auto-reload, stored keys

If you stored an API key in a game mod, a script or a coding tool, it keeps working, and keeps billing, until you revoke or stop using it. Deleting it from the console is the clean way to be sure.

Before you cancel: data and usage checks

  • Export what you need. If the account offers an export or download for conversations, do it first. What remains available on a free tier can differ from a paid one.
  • Finish long projects. Work that depends on higher usage limits or paid-only features may become harder to complete after the period ends.
  • Check the end date. Cancel a few days before renewal rather than on the day, in case a time zone or processing delay catches you out.
  • Note any team link. If your plan was provided through a workspace, cancelling a personal account will not change the team bill.
  • Know the refund position. Refund rules depend on the provider’s terms and, for app-store purchases, on Apple or Google. Read the current policy rather than assuming.

Post-cancellation verification checklist

Check What a good result looks like
Billing screen Shows cancelled, ending, or an end date instead of a next charge date
Confirmation email Arrives within a short time from the provider you used
Subscription list (Apple or Google) The entry shows expiry rather than renewal
Card or bank statement No new charge appears after the old period ends
Other platforms No second subscription is active on a different store or account

Set a reminder for the day after the old renewal date, then glance at your statement. If a charge still appears, contact the billing party that took the money, since the service itself cannot refund an Apple or Google charge in many cases.

Troubleshooting: when the option is missing or the charge returns

If there is no cancel button, you are probably looking in the wrong place or logged into the wrong account, so repeat the receipt check. If the plan is part of a team workspace, only an admin can change it. If a charge appears after you cancelled, check whether you hold two subscriptions, for example one on the web and one through a phone store, and cancel the other one. Duplicate subscriptions created by buying again in a different place are surprisingly common. When all of that fails, use the provider’s support or help center and bring the receipt, the account email and the date of the charge.

Worked example: avoiding a surprise renewal

Suppose a plan renews on the 20th of each month and you decide on the 17th that you no longer need it. These are illustrative dates, not a statement about any real account. Step one is the receipt check, which shows the charge came through the phone store. Step two is cancelling there on the 17th, which leaves three days of margin. Step three is confirming that the store lists an expiry date of the 20th rather than a renewal. Step four is a reminder on the 21st to check the statement. If you had instead cancelled on the website, the store subscription would have kept billing, which is exactly how people end up paying for a plan they believe they ended.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose access immediately after I cancel Claude Pro?

Cancelling normally stops the next renewal rather than ending the current period, so paid features usually remain until the date your billing cycle ends. The exact behavior is set by Anthropic’s terms and, for app-store subscriptions, by Apple or Google. Check the renewal or end date on the billing screen after you cancel to confirm what applies to your account.

I deleted the app. Is my subscription cancelled?

No. Removing the app from a phone does not stop billing. A subscription is a billing agreement with whoever collects the payment, which might be Anthropic directly, Apple or Google Play. You must cancel in the place where you subscribed, and then confirm that the screen shows the subscription as cancelled or set to expire.

Does cancelling Claude Pro also stop my API charges?

Generally no. The consumer chat subscription and API access for developers are billed separately, so one does not cancel the other. If you also created an API account and added a card or credits, review the billing area of that developer console on its own. Keep in mind that exact billing arrangements can change, so read the current pricing and billing pages.

How do I know which platform I subscribed through?

Look at the receipt email. A receipt from Apple points to the App Store, one from Google Play points to Google, and one sent by the service itself usually means a web checkout. Your card or bank statement line can help too. If none of these settle it, the billing section of the account page often states how the plan is managed.

Can I come back later if I cancel?

Usually yes. Cancelling does not normally prevent you from subscribing again, though plan names, limits and prices can change over time. If you want to keep your conversation history, check the export option or the data-retention notes in the account settings before the paid period ends, since what is available on a free plan can differ from a paid plan.
