Three honest answers, depending on who you are. If you want the look without running your own lighting, a mid-priced RGB desk is a reasonable shortcut: you pay roughly $30–$80 over the equivalent plain desk for a strip that is already routed, powered and hidden in a channel. That convenience is real.

If you are buying a desk to keep, skip the built-in lighting. An RGB desk at a $200 budget is a $150 desk with $50 of lights bolted on, and the compromise lands on the top thickness, the frame gauge and the depth — the three things you notice daily.

And if you already own a sturdy desk, the upgrade you want is a $20 addressable strip, a monitor arm that frees the whole back half of the surface, and twenty minutes of cable management. That gets you 90% of the look for 10% of the money.

What a gaming desk actually gives you over a plain desk

Built-in cable management. The most underrated feature and the one worth paying for: a rear grommet or full-width cutout, an under-top tray, velcro loops already fitted.
